Projects in Process

Before delving into some "real" work today, I wanted to share some projects that I've been working on and some recent little things.

I've been working on a couple of embroideries based on my favorite Twilight Zone episodes. I'm partially done with one based on Eye of the Beholder:

The other one will star my favorite actor: Richard Kiel.

I also have a little dress in the pipeline, but I haven't touched it in a week. I'm working on this pattern:

I recently made this cute little card for a friend's birthday:

He has a Boston Terrier, in case you couldn't guess.

I think I want to spend an afternoon this weekend making more cards like this. It's a bit simpler than the ones I usually do, but I think they'd make a good 4-pack on Etsy. Maybe packs of one type of twee animal or different animals with coordinating colors and prints?

This Sunday, I also managed to weasel out of celebrating Easter with my family. I saw Casa de mi Padre and hit up the Frock You Huge Frocking Sale instead. My favorite part of Frock You is their vintage lingerie selection. Every time I've been to the sale, I've been able to get a lovely vintage foundation garment at a good price, like a black lace long-line bra, which is only bested in loveliness by my La Perla set (I used to have connections). This time, I picked up a 1960's open bottom girdle (which I'm considering dyeing) and this 1950's corset:

What an insane thing! There's a very small stain, but those are easy enough to get rid of (they are, I swear). This thing is by far the most intense foundation garment I own, and it definitely took some internet research to figure out how it's supposed to be worn. I know, it seems simple enough, but when it's on a hanger instead of a mannequin, it's very complicated. I need to find some nice ribbon to replace the current lacing. It's in good condition, but I'm just not into it.

Insult Embroidery

I came across this Shakespeare insult kit and decided that the most productive use would be for embroidery.

I've already made a couple by pairing the insult with floral fabrics. I have a couple more in mind that I'll be putting up on my Etsy page, The Cat in Glasses.

I did it. I became a living, breathing caricature and now have a little Etsy shop: The Cat in Glasses. I have a handful of items up and am working on getting more posted. It's some vintage stuff, some embroidery stuff and some paper stuff.I'm slowly figuring the whole thing out. It's a lot of work, but I think I'm getting it. Maybe? I have a feeling I need to start using Twitter again.

Very Belated Christmas Gifts Posts

I almost always make handmade gifts for my family. I'm not a big shopper, and I can't really buy them anything particularly meaningful, anyways. This year, I made everyone embroidery art. I didn't have a chance to take any photos before I gave them to my family, but they were able to take pictures for me. It's a bit belated, but I wanted to share the pieces I did, because they're pretty cool, I dare say.

For my relatives with pets, I made little humorous pet portraits, like this one of my sister's cat:

For my mom, I created this portrait of our family dog:

I based that piece on this picture:

As you can see, the family dog doesn't usually wear a bow tie.

Here's the one I made for my dad:

Fiendly Froglips is the bird's name. She used to be my bird when I was teenager, but I couldn't take her with when I went to college. She fell in love with my dad, and I'm pretty sure that she thinks he's her mate. The two of them hang out together, eating corn chips, drinking beer and starting internet fights on poker playing sites.

My youngest sister doesn't really have a pet of her own. I still wanted to create something meaningful for her, so I made a portrait of us three sisters together:

I couldn't find any good pictures of my aunt's cats, so I took this well known picture:

And made an embroidered piece with my aunt's favorite color:

I gave three more this year, but unfortunately I don't have any pictures. For my grandparents, I printed their wedding photo on a piece of printable fabric and embroidered embellishments over it. For my grandmother on my mom's side, I created a n embroidery of a Bichon puppy with a little bow. And for a close family friend, I created a portrait of his two golden retrievers wearing top hats, monocles and bow ties. If I get hold of photos, I'll post them.
